Eh....What's Up, Doc?
It's me, DB, and after a LONG time being away from THIS blog, I'm back! I've been writing reviews of movies over on my other blog, DB Reviews (which you should check out, btw!).
This blog, however, is dedicated to Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies, the classic cartoon series of shorts starring Porky Pig, Foghorn Leghorn, Sylvester and Tweety, Daffy Duck and everyone's favorite cartoon rabbit (or "wabbit", as Elmer Fudd likes to call him), Bugs Bunny!
This list is a list of my own favorites. If you have a favorite that you think I omitted from this list, then please let me know what it is in the comments!
The countdown will start from #10 and go down to #1.
10. "Rabbit Fire". This one featured the classic Bugs/Daffy feud "Rabbit Season" vs "Duck Season". This also is the first short of the "hunting trilogy", directed by Looney Tunes legend Chuck Jones. In this short, Elmer Fudd (who was voiced by Arthur Q. Bryan) was lured to Bug's hole by Daffy, convinced that it was rabbit season. Bugs tells Elmer that it's duck season and the classic feud between Bugs and Daffy is born!
9. "Rabbit Seasoning" The 2nd of the "hunting trilogy" makes the countdown because of Bugs! Bugs is a master at reverse psychology and he definitely shows off his skills in this short! Once again, Elmer is hunting for sport again and the feud between Bugs and Daffy also makes an appearence. This time, Daffy begins the short by putting up signs that say "Rabbit Season", when it's really duck season! He wants to have fun, but instead, he ends up getting shot, a lot, with hilarious results, thanks to Bugs!
8. "Fast and Furry-ous" This one marks the debut of the classic Looney Tunes duo Road Runner and Coyote (aka "Genococcyx Californianus" and "Canis Latrans", two of their many given Latin names). These two make a good slapstick comedy duo! Despite his many attempts, using many gadgets and machines from the ACME Corporation, Coyote often fails at catching the Road Runner and his failures are often funny, like when he plummets to the ground after being sent flying or when he turns into a pancake! This cartoon marks the first of millions of failed attempts to catch that speedy bird!
7. "A Street Cat Named Sylvester" Suffrin' succatash! Before Sylvester the cat and Tweety Bird went off to solve mysteries, they appeared in many different Looney Tunes shorts together, often with Granny and Hector the dog. In this short, Sylvester finally catches Tweety, but he must hide him so that Granny doesn't find out! Hector is injured, but he still tries to prevent Sylvester from eating Tweety. "Bad ol' putty tat!"
6. "Rhapsody Rabbit" In this short, Bugs Bunny tries to play "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2", a classical song composed by Franz Liszt. While trying to play the piece, Bugs is being bothered by a rodent! This short was the focus of a big time controversy, as the story in the short was exactly the same as the story in "The Cat Concerto", a Tom and Jerry short with Tom playing the piano and Jerry as the mouse.
5. "Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century!" This is one of Daffy's most famous roles! Daffy is space hero Duck Dodgers (a spoof of Buck Rodgers) and he and his eager young space cadet Porky Pig try to claim Planet X in the name of the Earth. They battle Marvin the Martian on the planet's surface (well mostly, with one scene that has both Dodgers and Marvin in their respective ships, firing a cannon at each other) to see who will claim the planet! This was a critically acclaimed role for Daffy, as this character would gain popularity over time! This character even got his own series many years later and was even featured in Looney Tunes: Back in Action!
4. "Speedy Gonzales" "Heppa! Heppa! Andale! Andale!" The fastest mouse in all of Mexico makes the list here! This cartoon marks his 1st ever appearence! In this one, he battles Sylvester the Cat (for the 1st of many times), who guards a place with cheese! The AJAX Cheese Company! Lots of mice fail, but not Speedy, as he shows Sylvester how fast he can be!
3. "Devil May Hare" This short marks another first in Looney Tunes history, the first appearence of the Tasmanian Devil (aka Taz). In this short, Bugs Bunny makes his way to a forest, where all the animals are running in terror of the Tasmanian Devil! Bugs meets Taz and uses his wits (and skills) to mess with him. Bugs even gives Taz a "Wild Turkey Surprise", a bunch of dynamite sticks made to resemble a turkey. In the end, Taz finds love with a female Devil and Bugs is minister to their quick wedding!
2. "What's Opera, Doc?" This short is a classic! Sung to the tunes of composer Richard Wagner (including his "Ride of the Valkyries"), this short features Bugs and Elmer Fudd, as Elmer tries to catch Bugs through paradies of Wagner's operas! He finally catches him, but is sad that he killed him (well, he didn't really. Bugs was just acting) for which Bugs says "Well, what do you expect from an opera? A happy ending?"
1. "Duck Amuck" This is my favorite! It features Daffy Duck, who starts out as a Robin Hood type character. When he starts the short, he says "Stand Back, Musketeers!", but as he goes through the short, the scenery suddenly disappears and the chaos ensues! The "mysterious animator" (revealed to be Bugs at the end) then draws different scenery, forcing Daffy to act out characters that are approiate to that scenery. The "animator" then messes with Daffy's look, his voice (using sound effects) and even the frames! I always crack up whenever I think of this short! I even like the 3DS game that was inspired by this short.
Well, that's the list! Please leave a thumbs up if you enjoyed! Don't forget to let me know in the comments if I omitted any short!
To quote Porky Pig, "Th..Th...Th.. That's All, Folks!"
