Recently, most teams in the NFL have had to cut many players in order for those teams to make a 53-man roster. Here's what I think of the noticable cuts:
The Rams cut Michael Sam, the first openly gay football player to be drafted by an NFL team. I think that he will play for an NFL team in the near future. He cleared waivers today, meaning that he can sign with a team to be on that team's practice squad, and it can be whichever team he chooses. I think that, with a bit of experience on a practice squad, he can make any team's defence, and maybe throw a wrench into the opponent's offensive plans. Whichever team wants him on the practice squad will be OK with me!
Former Denver Bronco Champ Bailey was also cut by his new team, the New Orleans Saints. Now why would the Saints cut this multi-time All-Star? Well, it seems like he's getting older, and maybe he's lost a step. Perhaps the Saints considered the fact that Bailey's best years may be behind him, in Denver when he was playing alongside Peyton Manning and John Elway. Maybe it's time he should retire? He's definitely got the Hall of Fame numbers!
Another notable release done by the Saints was their kicker Shayne Graham. I'm ok with that, since he's getting up there in age. Usually, around 40 or so is the time when players should start to think about hanging up their cleats, unless your Brett Favre of course. He spent much of his career in Cincy, where he made a name for himself. Overall, he's only had 4 FG attempts blocked during his career, which is noteworthy!
The Browns released Nate Burleson, who made a name for himself in both Minnesota and Seattle. Sure, he's not a top tier wideout like Megatron (Calvin Johnson, for those who don't already know what that is), but he's only 33, so he may have a few more good years in him before he's all set and done. I'd say he should join a team that may need a good WR2 or WR3. He could fit that need.
To top off this post, I have to mention a player my team, The Patriots, cut. And that's Josh Boyce. Why? He's only played for the Pats just one year, he's only 23, and he caught 9 passes for 121 yards! Perhaps the injury bug is to blame? My opinion is: I think the Pats should rethink this cut, and maybe give this kid another chance. If the injuries do mount up, however, then they should consider moving him.
So, what do you think of the players NFL teams cut? Was your favorite player cut?
